Medical Related Waste
Since our inception in 1996, U.S. Industrial Technologies, Inc. has specialized in lab-packing and disposal of all types of wastes chemicals including unwanted pharmaceuticals, medical wastes and medications.
Managing unwanted pharmaceuticals can be confusing. There are varying regulations based on the type of pharmaceuticals (e.g.: controlled substances, hazardous or non hazardous liquids, or solid waste) being discarded. In addition, there are numerous regulations that are dependent on the type of waste generators for example, hazardous and non hazardous, universal handler, etc. that can create uncertainty. New pharmaceuticals appear on the market frequently and are not easily recognized. Some may have uncommon names instead of listed brand names. On the other hand, many pharmaceuticals can be listed under a hazardous waste name. In order to limit the confusion and liability, some facilities have elected to characterize all of their pharmaceutical wastes, with the exception of controlled substances, as universal waste.
USIT alleviates the pressure on the generator by providing trained chemists to help classify, package, transport, and dispose of these wastes. Medical related wastes can include; spills, unused preparations, IV, outdated medications, patients' medications, unit doses, and partially administered doses. On average, a hospital or large medical facility will maintain 3000 to 6000 items in is formulary. Every item must be evaluated to determine whether special handling is required under the federal, state, and local regulations.
